    Diet, Exercise & Lifestyle

    Diet

    Then VS Now

“When I first started modeling, I ate Snickers bars for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I didn’t know about nutrition, or really, I always just had a super-fast metabolism.”

“But also, because my body was maturing and growing up, I had to learn how to eat a more balanced diet. And I really learned and got excited about baking and cooking with healthy ingredients, fresh ingredients … and learning what it means to actually eat clean.”

“I stopped eating Goldfish and Oreos and started eating kale salads and avocado toast. It changed my energy. I realized, OK, how I eat affects how I feel.”

“I’m a vegetarian, so I try to take care of my body and get enough protein even though I don’t eat meat.”

    Fresh Veggies and Fruits

“I love eating fresh fruit, vegetables, and clean protein, like a fresh piece of fish, cod or salmon with some vegetables on the side. I enjoy trying out new sauces and spices to add extra flavour.”

“In doing so, I not only feel better in my body and more confident in my body, but I also have so much more energy. That has been a whole other education.”

“Keeping my diet healthy is important, so I try to eat lots of nutrient-dense foods. I haven’t gotten into the detox craze, but I make sure to have a colourful diet: lots of green, purple and orange foods. It’s more fun to think of nutrition in colours than in calories or grammes.”

    Karlie’s Food Diary

    Breakfast Lunch and Snacks

    Breakfast
“I’m all about breakfast, it’s my favorite meal of the day. Mainly because there’s so many yummy sweet options like cereals, yogurts, pancakes, and crepes. Egg whites are also a staple for me – they’re a great source of protein and I can always have them no matter where in the world I’m working. So even when I’m running out the door on my way to work I always make time to stop at this little coffee shop on the corner because they make a mean almond milk cappuccino, and it’s not easy to do.”

“I love having breakfast at the Butcher’s Daughter in Manhattan. They have loads of delicious and nutritious options. My favorite is the AB & J, it’s a delicious combination of home-made raw almond butter, sliced bananas and raw honey on toasted grain bread, or their smashed avocado toast.”

    Lunch
“My perfect lunch would be a delicious smoothie with a salad. I like to keep it light at lunchtime because I prefer having a big hearty breakfast and I am always snacking throughout the day.”

    Today I snacked on:
“For snacks, I always carry almonds, apples, and an oatmeal pack. And I also love anything with dark chocolate. I also keep an apple, banana, or yogurt on me for when I’m on the go. Right now I love this yoghurt called love Siggi’s, it’s an Icelandic-style yoghurt filled with protein.”

    My favorite healthy snack is:
“On a cheat day though, I’m all about dark chocolate. Dark chocolate, sea salts, throw a little caramel in there, it’s heaven.”

    My signature health dish is:
“I love fresh papaya with sea salt and lime, or watermelon. It would have to be something refreshing. It’s not super indulgent, I know, but I could eat that for the rest of my life.”

    Good Hydration:
“I’m big on drinking lots of water. I don’t drink coffee after 3 p.m. because I really try and sleep.”

What I eat after long runs | Karlie Kloss

    Exercise

    Workout Routine

“I love to run, I love to cycle, I love to swim. In New York there’s a great gym called Dog Pound which my trainer, Kirk Myers, started. I switch up my routine – light weights or body weight, cardio, sometimes jump rope or a run. Boxing is something I’ve spent time getting into too. Just challenging my body and mind to keep trying new things and getting stronger.”

“I love being outside…I travel so much, so what I love doing is that I bring my tennis shoes with me to every city that I go to and just go for a run—whether I’m in Paris or Barcelona or even New York.”

“Whether running, biking, swimming, or dancing, I just like to always be on the move.”

    Ballet

“I did ballet my whole childhood, my whole life, before modelling. That was my main focus and how I spent all my nights and weekends, in my ballet slippers, in my pointe shoes, at the ballet studio. I think that really trained my brain to be conscious of taking care of my body; being a dancer is hard work and you have to have good energy and be strong.”

    Mediation

“I’m a big fan of mindfulness and meditation as it relates to a daily practice. Whether it’s a traditional structured meditation or not, I love to start my morning with it if I have the time. I will sit and have 10 minutes of deep breathing, closing my eyes and doing a transcendental meditation, but I also often just use the app Head Space. I think it’s really such a great gift you can give yourself. Taking time to reconnect to your body and set the intentions for the day or whatever you’re trying to accomplish while also nurturing yourself. Even last night I was jetlagged and fell asleep to a sleep meditation podcast… It calms you.”

    Staying Happy and Healthy

“More than anything else I just feel better. I can think better, I have more energy in my day-to-day life. It’s a constant commitment and challenge to eat healthy and stay consistent with exercise and drink enough water. These basic things that everybody knows they should do, but for whatever reason we get distracted and busy and it becomes a hassle. But the thing is when you really feel the difference from taking care of yourself that keeps you motivated. I feel strong and lean and energised by eating good food that will fuel me and when I sleep well. Energy and wellness relates so closely to beauty – and happiness in everyday life.”

    Karlie Kloss Beauty Secrets

    First Things First: Beauty Sleep

‘I don’t think anyone understands how important it is [to get enough sleep]. If you have a choice where you’ve been only sleeping five or six hours and can sleep an extra hour or work out, sleep an extra hour. ‘You’re running your body down, which will affect your energy and hold onto excess water and weight. It will make you hungrier. Five to six hours for a week really prohibits your cognitive and hormone functions. You really need seven to eight hours. Working out harder or better or eating less isn’t the answer. It’s about getting enough sleep.’

    Natural Skin Care Products

“I love… beauty products that are cleaner, more natural, or organic alternatives that I was never exposed to growing up. Like coconut water—there wasn’t much of it in St. Louis. But being conscious of all of that, I feel different, I feel completely different.

    Skin Care Routine

    Skin Care Tips

“I just take better care of my skin so I don’t have to wear as much makeup. I’ve found that’s been a better investment of my time, so I’m diligent at the end of the day about taking off makeup, cleansing, toning, and using a serum and a retinol.”

“I take lots of long flights, so I try to travel make-up-free. Shu Uemura‘s cleansing oil is great for removing make-up and I’m a big fan of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. It’s a brilliant night cream and is perfect for a long-haul trip when moisturising is a must.”

“I have to wear lots of make-up for shows and shoots, so it’s important that the products I use undo any damage done during the day. La Roche-Posay‘s Hydraphase Intense Masque is really gentle on the skin and L’Oréal Paris Perk-up Cream is fab for around the eyes.”

    Beauty Sandwich

“There’s this guy who is called The Beauty Sandwich who has some sort of ultrasound technology he uses for facials. I’ve done his treatments before the Met Gala or a big red carpet, and it does some magical thing to the muscles under your face, your jaw, your neckline — it just pulls and tightens in some mysterious, magical way.”

    Lymphatic Drainage Massage

“With my beauty routine, I like to keep it simple. In the mornings, I like to do lymphatic drainage massage on my face with my hands or a jade roller. On a daily basis, I keep my makeup very minimal.”

    Anti Aging

The term ‘anti-ageing’ is something that has never spoken to me as a consumer. True, I’m not thinking about wrinkles, but I don’t think skincare or investing in your own wellness should be to do with ageing, or anti-ageing, it should be more about nourishing your skin and your body. I have nothing against the term, but I don’t think it’s descriptive of what you’re doing. To me it’s more about self-care.”

    Nail Care

“When I started doing research into nail care and nail polish, I found out that being ‘five free’ is really important – it means the product doesn’t have the unhealthy additives. Deborah Lippmann’s are ‘five free.”

“Pale pink [is my favourite nail colour]. I did ballet for years and had to have neutral nails. I like Essie’s Romper Room; the ballet look stuck.”

    Body Care

    SPF-Sunprotection

“My mom would always yell at us to put on SPF. Her warnings are ingrained in my mind and every time I go to the beach I’m super-careful.”

    Make Up

    Moisturizer

“In terms of my beauty routine… it’s about how quickly I can get out the door, which is why I like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser… it doesn’t clog pores.”

    Face Oils

“I love all oils, coconut, olive—I actually use olive oil on my skin weirdly enough. I like taking a basic cream, like Embryolisse, and mixing in a drop of the Decleor Neroli Serum or Rodin Oil.”

    Lips

“I have really red, bright lips and I like to mute it sometimes… RMS Un Cover-Up in 22… has a bit of green in it, which cuts the red down but not in a drastic way that makes it look crazy, like I have no lips.”

    The Perfect Eyelash

“I feel like all of my teenage years were spent backstage! I’ve learnt a ton of different tricks – for curling your lashes, you can actually use a little spoon, like a teaspoon, to crimp the lashes and it’s almost better than an eyelash curler. You put the spoon on your eyelid and just pinch the lashes along the spoon. It’s super gentle.”

‘I’m always learning something new on shoots but my favourite is to lightly heat up your eyelash curler with a hairdryer; the curl will hold longer and really help give a full lash. Works every time!’

    Hair Care

    Basics

“My hair grows really slowly, so I’m not trying to do anything intentional to it, but it’s taking forever to grow out. Right now, I’m liking the Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray by Oribe, and also the Bob Recine Hair Oil, which gives it shine but doesn’t make it droop.”

    Recap

Karlie Kloss is one of the most iconic high fashion models. She radiates from within and is not only incredibly beautiful but also intelligent.

“I’m certainly not an expert and I imagine I’ll spend my life figuring it out. What I do know, is that you can’t take it all on yourself: find amazing people to collaborate with, build a team, and support other people doing the same. When you share your goals and ambitions with other people and they share with you, you exist in an energizing cycle of always creating new things with people that believe in you.”

“I’m certainly a big fan of Christy Turlington. She’s just an icon. The way she lives her life, the kind of woman she is – an obvious timeless beauty but she’s also a mother, a philanthropist, a marathon-runner… She inspired me to want to attempt to run a marathon – I did that this year for the first time. I would have never imagined that would be something I would do.”
