    Diet

    You Are What You Eat

“For me it’s all from the inside out, you are what you eat. I don’t really have a specific diet, I just eat very healthily. I cook a lot and I don’t really eat out a lot. When you go out to eat something or you order food in, it gets really tricky because you don’t know what people are putting in there. I do 3 big meals but really my last one is at 6 pm. In my mind, if you eat a little earlier your body has more time to digest the food properly and I think that is a little bit better for your body.”

    Counting Calories

“But I never counted my calories and I never had to. I can kind of eat what I want. I’ve been eating right for many many years. I know from what is right or wrong for my body.”

    Keep It Balanced

“I like to stick to fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. In 2013, I made a New Year’s resolution to drink a fruit and veggie smoothie every morning. It’s one of those that went from a resolution to a life habit. My kids and I do it together, and we love it. It’s important to keep a balanced diet, but I’m not a fan of deprivation. If I want a cheeseburger, I am not only going to eat that cheeseburger, but I’m going to enjoy that cheeseburger.”

“One thing [the kids and I] do is have a smoothie every morning.”

    The Basics

“For me, the basics are most important. When I eat well and keep hydrated I can see the difference in my face when I look in the mirror. You’ve got to look in the mirror and see if there is something up. That way, you know if you break out it could be because of the garbage you ate. If you look dry and your skin doesn’t snap back, you’re not hydrated. If you just look at yourself and listen, you know what to do.”

    Beauty Is Food

“For me, beauty is all about food. There is only so much you can do topically. I learned that a really long time ago. I’ve been in this industry since 1992 and I’ve always believed you are what you eat. Having said that, a lot of work has to go into every meal to make sure you’ve got all of the fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants and hydration you need. We can’t do it all because it’s a lot of work to prepare.”

“Often, I’ll find the time to do the prep (like put chia seeds in to soak overnight), but not everyone has the time and freedom to do things like this, especially as we get older! I find that a supplement is a great add-on to my already pretty healthy diet. A couple of years ago I started taking one Perfectil a day because I was getting older and thought, ‘What do I have to lose?!’ Of course, no pill will solve your beauty problems. Food always comes first, but I do think it’s a good boost.”

    Exercise

    Long Runs

“I pretend it’s bikini season all year and regularly make healthy decisions. My favourite workout is a long run along the Westside Highway, which stretches along the Hudson River in New York City…it’s a beautiful path, and you always feel surrounded by such an amazing community. “

    Flexible Workouts

“With my busy schedule, it’s impossible to have a set fitness routine. So instead I like to try and incorporate exercise into my daily life whenever I can—which requires some creativity. Sometimes I jump on the trampoline with my kids or take a hike with my dogs in the canyon by my house. Sometimes I run for 30 minutes on my treadmill, but I prefer to be outdoors. When I’m travelling, it could be doing a few sit-ups in my hotel room before I head to work.”

    Treadmill

“I have a treadmill that’s really great, but it just sits there unused. It looks nice, but I don’t have time to use it.”

    Dancing

“I danced for 15 years of my life. Which was my love and my passion.”

    Beauty Secrets

    Skin Care

“I think it’s best to keep it simple. I wash my face with baby shampoo — if it’s good for babies, it has to be good for me, too. It even gets off my TV makeup and false lashes. Then I’ll use the Buttermilk Moisturizer from Mario Badescu. I don’t use toners or anything else. I feel like it just sucks everything out of my skin.”

    Moring Skin Care Routine

“I take a shower every morning and wash my hair with Iles Formula. I have friends that don’t wash their hair for five days. That doesn’t work for me. I feel like I’m not awake if I don’t wash my hair. And if my hair is done at work that day, I’ll wash it again when I get home. I don’t like all that product getting in the bed.”

    Night Skin Care Routine

“At the end of my day, even if I am exhausted, I always wash off my make-up. For removing eye make-up, I again use baby shampoo. Then, I try different moisturisers at night that are a bit richer – I like Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum or Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil.”

    Must Haves

“Charlotte Tilbury foundation, tap a cream blush over my cheeks, fill in my brows with an Anastasia Beverly Hills skinny pencil, then brush L’Oréal Voluminous over my lashes.”

    Carry On’s

“Blotting papers — I get super shiny. And Pawpaw lip balm from Australia. My makeup artist of fifteen years Linda introduced me to it years ago before it became so popular.”

    Sun Screen

“I love the sun, and I believe vitamin D is good for us, but I think I sometimes overdo it. When I started noticing little spots on my face and have had to get a few removed, so I’ve started to use more sunscreen. I like the tinted one from La Roche-Posay. It doesn’t leave a weird blue cast like some do.”

What pimples you SHOULD and SHOULDN’T pop?

    Go Natural

“I want them to feel beautiful just the way they are. Everyone is wearing so much foundation and contouring, but I always tell them their skin is gorgeous, not to cover it up.”

    SOS: Pimples

“I tell my 16-year-old daughter that she must not pick or touch her pimples, but I do it myself. Sometimes you just have to! Over the years I’ve learned how to squeeze them properly, and that’s the key. You must never do it with your nails. You need to do it with your knuckles, go deep and really get the whole thing. If you don’t get it all properly, it will take longer to heal than if you have just left it alone, and it will leave scarring too! I find that Mario Badescu Drying Lotion does the job, but only once you’ve got it all out.”

    Coconut Oil

“I love using just plain, old coconut oil that you get in the supermarket. Especially in Los Angeles right now [where Heidi lives], everything is so dry and I’m outside a lot. I love to lather up some coconut oil in my hair and on my body too. It’s so inexpensive and it just makes everything feel so yummy and nourished. In general, I like going more towards the natural things instead of the sorts of products that are full of perfumes and astringents. I really love trying all of those things but very rarely do I actually stick with it. I’d rather use coconut oil.”

    Hair Care

“Honestly, I do very little to my hair. I wash it and let it air dry. I like to give it a break when I am off-camera from the hairdryers and straighteners and curling irons. Sometimes, I will put it in a messy bun if I am going out to dinner but, overall, I like it when it has a bit of natural texture and wave to it without being overdone or full of products.”

    Every Day Make Up

“When I am not working, I try to keep it very natural. Most days I don’t wear any make-up but, if I am running errands, I use a bit of a light base to even out my skin tone and a bit of blush for my cheeks to give it a bit of a glow. I like Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Pencil and Gel too.”

    Perfect Eye Lashes

“If I am going out with my husband [the German guitarist Tom Kaulitz] to dinner, I may be a bit more bold by painting on a red lip or adding some more mascara, for a more dramatic eye. I think make-up should be fun so I like to try different eyeshadows and colours.”

    Supplements

“I definitely think that you can buy all the potions and creams but it is essential to nourish your skin from within. I drink a fresh smoothie every morning that is made from fresh fruit and vegetables, and I take two Perfectil Vitamins which are targeted for my skin, hair and nails.”

How I got rid of my stretch marks

    Anti Stretch Marks

“I didn’t get stretch marks during my pregnancies, and I wasn’t even moisturizing myself like a maniac.”

    Loofah

“I use a loofah thing, one of those things that are very scratchy with handles on each side. I do my body and my butt and scrub myself down. Sometimes I wear body makeup, and it’s so thick. I need to loofah that off.”
