    Diet, Exercise & Lifestyle

I try to eat whatever I want. I don’t like putting myself on a diet, but I try to eat organic, healthy, and lean with lots of green vegetables.

    Elsa Hosk’s Food Diary

    Diet No-No’s:
I try to eat healthy and a plant-based diet. I watched the documentary What the Health, and it affected me a lot. [And] I was like, ‘OK, I have to change how I eat.’ In Sweden we eat a lot of dairy, cheese, and eggs.

I’ve cut that [lactose, eggs] out for the past 5 weeks and I’m seeing a big improvement in my skin and in my belly. I like food to be as organic and natural as possible.

    Salty Tooth:
I generally always eat what I want. [So] I think when you work out a lot, you can afford to eat more because your body’s metabolism is higher. I like healthy food and prefer that anyways, but if I want pizza or a can of Coca-Cola every once in a while, I’m going to have it. I just try to have a few slices, and that’s it.

    Exercise

    Workout Routine and Lifestyle

Playing sports is great when you’re young. It teaches you how to focus, how to direct your energy, how not to think about a million other things that are going on.

Boxing makes you kind of tight, so it’s really good to mix that with barre, Pilates, or something that’ll stretch you out and make you longer. I’m not the person that loves to be in the gym so much. I like to mix it up as much as possible; otherwise, I’ll get bored.

Lots of weight training, squats, a little bit of cardio, but mostly just adding more weights into my workouts. And working out with friends to make it fun. That’s always so important.

    Basketball

All-time favorite workout is basketball. It’s very hard to do basketball training, though, but it’s my favorite.

    Running

I just started running. I don’t time it; I don’t put any pressure on myself, I just go the pace I want. [And] I think that’s a really beautiful way to feel yourself and feel your body and see the city”) and weightlifting (“On the runway, you’re wearing really heavy wings and really high heels, so you need really strong legs so you don’t fall”).

    Skin Care Routine

    Overall Skin Care Routine

I switch my products so much, but right now, I’m really into organic skin care. [And] I hope it’s here to stay. I like that whole vibe and just being really gentle with your skin and not putting too much products that are harsh.

    Favorite Moisturizer

I use Dr. Barbara Sturm—she makes this blood cream that’s incredible. She draws your blood. The first time I used it was during fashion week in Paris and I had been so tired and cold, my skin was a crazy shade of grey. [Dr. Sturm] came to my hotel room and took my blood and the next morning they sent my cream to my hotel. The morning after that, my skin was back to life. I didn’t believe it at first, but it was really amazing.

    Favorite Face Mask

The Biotherm mud mask is really good. It’s a green metallic shade. It draws out all your impurities. My boyfriend steals it all the time. I’m always out of it.

    Morning Routine

I have very sensitive skin that gets dry, so I was encouraged by my dermatologist to use gentle cleansing products to not irritate it too much. I use Cetaphil as a cleanser in the morning, and I always use sunblock.

    Evening Routine

It has taken me so long to understand my skin, but the formula that works best for me is, gentle and less is more. But I do cleanse my skin well at night with a good natural cleanser by Dr. Hauschka or Avalon Organics.

    Acne Prone Skin (Hacks)

My skin is not flawless by the way, I really struggle with bad skin a lot…and I still get acne all the time. I do the whole thing, I cleanse twice, I never sleep in makeup but I really believe it’s what you eat and what you put on the inside. I try to eat really healthy and stay away from dairy which will clog pores and any toxins.

    Make Up

    Basic Face Routine

I always do the same makeup because it’s what works with my face. Just eyeliner and lots of mascara – very ’60s. I like lots of lashes, beautiful eyes, nude lips—very simple but still striking.

    Glam Make-Up Routine

If I go out at night, I’ll really turn it out. I do the contour and concealer and cat eyeliner. I have a Tom Ford contour kitRMS concealer, and my liquid liner by Kat Von D. It’s so good. I’ve tried everything because that’s the only makeup I do on myself, and that’s really the best. It’s really easy and lasts. Then I use Maybelline Great Lash. Never fails me.

    Eyes

Black liner looks harsh on me because I’m so blond, so I do a brown liner with a black mascara. My favorite is ‘L’Oreal Voluminous’ on my top and bottom lashes. For a while, I only did mascara on the upper lashes, but it makes me look too pretty.

    Eyeliner

I’m really good at doing eyeliner. That’s my go-to look! I know a lot of people struggle with eyeliner, but I love it. I think I learned so many tricks from makeup artists. My trick is that you go really thin inside [the eye], and then you go thicker and thicker and thicker. And then you flick it more straight out. Most people go up too much.

My eyeliner is this Kat Von D Tattoo Liner… I’ve tried every single eyeliner, and this is the best. I use it in Mad Max Brown.

    Lips

On my lips, I just do a little bit of liner, just a color silhouette.

I think makeup is so much fun. If you’re having a bad day, you can always kind of hide that with makeup. I think if you’re doing a strong eye, like I just did for the Fragrance Foundation Awards (shown), I would go with a more nude lip. I love the Victoria’s Secret’s Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain in Adored—it’s the perfect shade for this kind of look.

    Skin

In the daytime during the summer, I only wear ‘Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer’ for coverage. I keep that in my bag at all times. I love ‘RMS Buriti Bronzer’ because it has a little bit of red in it, and my skin is on the reddish side, so it matches really well.

    Hair Care

My hair gets very light in the summer, but the problem with using all these products and going into the pool a lot is that my hair gets very yellow. I love purple shampoo!

I use argan oil when I have dry ends. A good hair brush, like a Mason Pearson, is great because it doesn’t damage the hair. I like Kerastase shampoo and conditioner best.

For events, when I am working with a hairstylist, I like to really go for it and create a style. But it’s so hard to do anything with my hair in the summer, I just try to embrace my natural waves when I’m out. If I have a week with a lot of shoots I’ll actually sleep with my hair in a hair mask. When you wash it off in the morning it’s like you’ve just refreshed your hair. I also use purple shampoo to keep my hair from getting brassy – the Silver Shampoo by Sachajuan is a favorite.

    Signature Scent & Hygiene

Oh my God, I sweat so much! You have to keep deodorant in your purse and use those deodorising wipes that cool you off a bit.

I think it depends what kind of perfume you’re wearing. If you’re wearing the Love Me More fragrance that’s here in the stories right now—it’s our newest fragrance—it’s kind of on the heavier side. It’s very sexy, and it’s got more of a darker feel. I would probably put it here around my neck just because it’s sexier. If someone leans in and kisses you, they will smell it. And if you’re wearing something more fruity and light, a more everyday kind of perfume, I would maybe put it here (points to wrists) so it’s not as sensual.

I love the Tory Burch Bel Azur fragrance to feel fresh, even if I’m in the city and I have a lot of work coming up. It has this vibe of vacation and traveling and the blue ocean. It also has peony and neroli, which are two of my favorites. I put it on and it takes me back to being on vacation—it can be a reminder in the middle of your stressful life. Smells for humans are so important, and as a model, being relaxed is everything.

    Recap

Elsa Hosk prefers to keep things simple when it comes to her diet and make-up routine. But she is very active when it comes to exercise and sports. For her, it is crucial to develop healthy habits. This is just one of the reasons why she is such an inspiration.

“I think life is so much about enjoying and not punishing yourself or restricting yourself too much. The more I let go of all my rules, the more free and happy I am, and nothing happens. So I just enjoy.”
