Introduction

Welcome to the glamorous world of one of the most famous supermodels of the late ’00s and ’10s. Dutch-born supermodel Doutzen Kroes started out as a model in 2003 and was quickly sent from the Netherlands to the United States to pursue modeling. She is best known for her work at Victoria’s Secret, becoming one of the brand’s angels. She is the second Dutch VS angel after Karen Mulder.

Over the years, Doutzen has also appeared on numerous magazine covers, and in 2013 she made history for being the first model to appear on four different international covers of the September issue of “Vogue.”

    Diet Philosophy

    I like to take care of myself and know what foods I should be eating.

    Growing up in the north of Holland, I had a healthy and balanced diet.

    Your diet is 70 percent responsible for how you look. You can exercise as much as you want, but if you don’t eat right. I’m not very strict, except right before a show or a bikini shoot. I just listen to my body and can eat half a hamburger, for example. It doesn’t have to be finished. I think the portions that are served are too big. Sizing your meals is very important. I still eat carbs because it doesn’t work for me to eat only protein and vegetables. I was raised on quinoa, rice and buckwheat. [And] I can really enjoy a cracker with avocado and salt and pepper, but after a show I’ll go get fries, haha.

    I love to cook. [So] I actually did Thanksgiving for the first time two years ago. I did the turkey, made cornbread and cranberry sauce—I was very surprised that it worked out really well and I really enjoyed it. Normally, I make fish and vegetables and rice.

    When I am with my mum, I am happiest and healthiest. She always taught me how to eat healthily. She always cooked from the garden, and it was always organic.

    My mom and dad both would grow vegetables. So, when I delivered my baby, we went there, and she would cook a lot, and we would eat all the vegetables from their garden.

    I’m a big French fry girl. I try to avoid them but sometimes you just need to indulge so I go for it!

    Exercise

    Workout Routine and Lifestyle

    I’ve biked my whole life. We didn’t have bus service when I was going to school in Holland, so I biked around 25 kilometers to school every day. I did speed skating, too, I was always working out. Then when I came to New York and I started modeling, I was boxing and now I’m doing ballet a lot, which I really like. Your body becomes really long and lean and toned instead of bulky and too muscular.

    [When] I am in Amsterdam at the moment and as I was biking I thought maybe this is why, because we have the canal and the bridges and I bike everywhere. It’s a lot of cardio when you go fast. I do that and pilates and I run around with the kids all day so I’m on my feet all day long. [And I also] I go to pilates three times a week.

    I maintain a healthy lifestyle all year round for my job but I definitely try to eat extra clean the night before a shoot and make sure to fit in a workout so that I feel my best. It’s also very important to be well rested so I try to get a good night’s sleep.

    Ballet Beautiful

    When I come to New York, I always try to see Mary Helen Bowers because I love to do my ballet exercises with her. When I do Ballet Beautiful, I feel muscles the day after that I didn’t even know I had. It lengthens my body and changes my posture.

    Pilates

    It strengthens my core and because of that i feel very strong and it changed my posture. Pilates is so much harder than it looks and something Cheryl always tells me is that I have to make it look like it’s easy.

    Dance Classes

    Recently I was asked to dance in a lingerie campaign. I was luckily introduced to Vincent Vianen who is an amazing dancer and choreographer. He even danced with Usher. It’s my favorite workout routine at the moment. I used to never be the first one on the dance floor and this was because I didn’t think I was a good dancer but I’ve always loved to dance. When I was asked to shoot lingerie while dancing, it was something where I was really faced with my own insecurities. I am going to continue to dance because I am going to be the first one on the dance floor now. One of the most important things Vincent taught me was to let go and to not think because I overthink and when you dance you have to let go, enjoy the music and really feel it. It’s really fun to bring the best out of yourself and compete with yourself and it’s getting better and better.

    Skin Care Routine

    Face

    I usually keep it to a minimum and don’t wear too much makeup to give my skin a break from when I’m working, so my skin care routine is just jumping in the shower and putting on moisturizer. I’ve been using vitamin E oil and that’s been working really well and then I’ll put on lip gloss or mascara and that’s it. And L’Oréal Paris BB cream—it’s quick and not heavy.

    I use moisturiser and sunscreen every day – even in winter – drink a lot of water and I love visiting facialists. There’s nothing better than having your face pampered with a massage, creams and masks.

    Ahead of going on the red carpet, in the morning, I’ll put on a clay mask to prepare.

    Evening Routine

    I think the most important thing is to always clean your face and ensure your make-up comes off at night. Going to bed with make-up is just so bad for your skin.

    Body

    When I’m on holiday, I put organic coconut oil in my hair at the end of the day. [So] when I’m on the beach, I put it on my body, cover myself in sand and then scrub. When you go into the sea, it leaves your skin as soft as silk.

    Erins Beauty Advice:
    1. Start using eye cream before: “I started using eye cream a year ago, definitely too late.
    2. Massage the moisturizer upward, using two fingers and moving them along the jawline and cheekbones: I rub it between my hands and massage it in. When you massage in this way, you drain all the water from your face, so it is very helpful to do it in the morning. I have noticed a difference, my face feels less puffy.
    3. Take care of your neck: The neck is your second face. I started taking care of my neck at the same time I started using creams and doing facials, it wasn’t that long ago.
    4. Massage the foundation with your hands: This is a tip I got from Path McGrath, who used to massage it in like a facial. I think it’s a great way to give a natural look.
    5. Black pencil on the inside of the eye: I like to put a little black pencil on the inside of the eye and elongate it a little bit so that the shape of the eye is a little more almond-shaped than round.

    Make Up

    Basic Face Routine

    I keep my skincare and makeup as easy as possible. In the morning I shower and rinse my face, then use a L’Oréal BB cream – I don’t have to worry about moisturiser, foundation or concealer when I use a hydrating BB cream. And curling my lashes makes such a big difference. Even if I’m not wearing mascara, I always give them a quick curl to open up my eyes. But usually I wear a little mascara and just keep the lip natural with a balm. If I’m applying oil on my baby, I’ll use a little on myself, too!

    A Night Out Glam

    Lots of black. I like to do black eyeliner, smoky eyes and brown eye shadow on top to lighten it up a little, and then a natural lip.

    Eyes

    I feel like it’s always important to curl your eyelashes. I always do when I wake up and you know you look tired, when you curl eyelashes and put mascara it makes such a huge difference, so that’s the trick that I always use.

    I’m pretty good at doing my makeup, but rarely wear it unless I’m working. If I do, I prefer a smoky eye over bold lips, for sure.

    Fragrance

    REVEAL Calvin Klein fragrance it feels close to my own body scent. It has a hint of salt and it’s very natural and I feel like it just complements your own body scent and that makes it very sexy.

    I don’t know the rules of putting it on, but I always just spray a little bit here [points to a pulse point on her wrist] and then do like that [touches her wrists together]. I put some on my hair.

    Hair Care

    Favourite Products

    My favourite product ever is definitely Elnett [hairspray], but I also use the Elvive Extraordinary hair oil as a mask, before a shower. Put it in dry hair until it really absorbs, then rinse it out in the shower and it leaves a beautiful shine.

    I don’t wash my hair every day so the natural oils stay in, and I use masks and other treatments. I love a simple, pulled-back ponytail in my day-to-day life. For the red carpet, I glam it up with a nod to Hollywood glamour – Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, and Katharine Hepburn are my favourite style icons.
