    Diet, Exercise & Lifestyle

    Diet

    Balance Is The Key

“It’s all about balance for me. One meal in the day will be lighter than others, probably during lunch I will [eat something] heavier so that my body has time to burn it off. Night-time is something lighter, and I will always have a big breakfast.”

“I would love to be vegetarian because of the benefits to the planet, and I’m eating less red meat, but it’s tough.”

    Listen Top YOUR Body

“I’ve always loved nutrition and because I’ve worked out for so many years, I’ve figured out what’s best for my body and keeping my energy up.”

    Breakfast

“My breakfast varies depending on my mood. I do a nice beauty smoothie. It contains coconut oil, flaxseed oil, banana, protein, some kind of antioxidant fruit like blueberries or strawberries, or some nut butter. I discovered it from doing research; I like to be on beauty blogs. I’ve always loved nutrition and because I’ve worked out for so many years, I’ve figured out what’s best for my body and keeping my energy up. It’s evolved from that.”

“Sometimes I also like to have eggs and toast or make a grilled cheese. I have one of these sandwich press things but you do it on the fire (or a gas stove) and it toasts the bread so beautifully.”

    Stay Hydrated Through the Day

“I drink ice water when I wake up in the morning. I drink lots of water.”

“That is the most important! I drink a lot of coconut water; I mix different things in my smoothie; I take fish oil… that kind of thing. And then just getting all the different food groups—all your veggies, fruits, carbohydrates.”

    Dieting

“I don’t like restrict myself from certain foods that I want, or kill myself at the gym. It’s really what’s comfortable for my body at the time and what’s best at that moment.”

    Metabolism

“I’ve been lucky — I was born with quite a fast metabolism. I’m that girl who orders the healthy plate with a side of fries. Your body is like a machine and everyone’s is different. I know mine quite well.”

    Juicing

“I love juices, they are a crucial part of my diet but I don’t think I would be able to live on just juices. I would be in a very bad mood! What is your secret for staying energetic? Although it was difficult at first, I have quit drinking coffee completely and now that I am not dependent on it I feel a lot more energetic without ups and downs. I also avoid a lot of wheat first thing in the morning.”

    Go To Smoothie

    • 1 frozen banana
    • 1 tsp. protein powder
    • 1 cup blueberries
    • 1 T chia seeds
    • 2 T almond butter
    • 1.5 cups coconut water
    • 1 tsp. spirulina

    Guilty Pleasure

“I love a croissant, especially in Paris, all the bread and patisseries are so delicious!”

“Of course I have a sweet tooth, for sure. I have a sweet tooth and a salty tooth. You need the salty to enjoy the sweet and then you can go back to the salty. I love Italian food. Like a creamy carbonara.”

    Travelling & Snacking

“When I travel, I always have different nuts on me, especially Brazil nuts and almonds, which are great for your hair and nails. Otherwise, I have protein bars or fruit, I think I have a banana in my bag right now.”

    Exercise

    Workout Routine

“I’ve always been in tune with my body. I started dancing when I was really young, and it just gives you a different sense of your body. Then I started with Victoria’s Secret and building my body with Justin [Gelband].”

    Pre VS Workout Routine

“I will probably work out four times a week, and I’ll be eating a lot of protein, just focusing on everything that goes in my body and maximizing my workouts. But also taking the time to rest in between is important. I’ll work out and then have a rest day to make my body adjust to what I’ve done to it the day before.”

“Basically, everything I can possibly do is on my mind a month before, but two weeks before is when I really focus. I do a lot of resistance training, weights, yoga, and Pilates. And I eat what I usually eat, maybe even a little bit more, because I’m tired from working out, but I eat clean.”

“I reduce my salt and sodium intake like soya sauce for example. I drink a lot of smoothies mixing oils, collagen powder and anti-oxidant fruits which is great for my skin and I have a very balanced diet.”

    Post Pregnancy Workout Routine

“Lately, I’ve been doing my workouts at night because I’ve had full days with my baby. I’ve been doing my own kind of yoga. It’s not traditional yoga, but I put on some music and mix in some Pilates and squat resistance stuff I’ve learned over the years. It’s calm: I can meditate through it and get some flow with some music. And it’s a little ritual for me. I do it every time I feel overwhelmed and stressed — I try at least twice a week. How often I do it depends on if I get my baby down or not.”

    Passive Workouts

“My favourite exercise is something that doesn’t feel like I’m exercising at all, such as swimming in the ocean or playing paddleball.”

    Yoga and Meditation

“It’s calm. I can meditate through it and get some flow with some music. It’s a little ritual for me. I do it every time I feel overwhelmed and stressed. I try at least twice a week.”

    Candice Swanepoel’s Workout Essentials

“I like to change it up, I do yoga, swimming, boxing and I have just started paddle boarding but I think that Pilates is my favourite. When I am in New York, I do an hour of resistance training with Justin Gelband, who has been my trainer for 9 years.”

    Candice Swanepoel’s Beauty Secrets

    Skin Care Routine

“I cleanse, tone, moisturize, and then do an eye cream religiously, twice a day. I use this gentle green tea cleanser that I get from Whole Foods. The reason I like a foaming cleanser is because I have quite oily skin. I really like to feel like I’m getting all the dirt off.  My serum is Biotherm they have one called the Phyto Plankton. It takes two weeks to start seeing a difference so I’m putting it to the test. I used to use the Colbert serum, that’s a great one.”

“For my eye cream, I use the Colbert Uplift. I like his products a lot.”

“My moisturizer is from my facialist, which I can’t give you. It’s a secret! My daytime routine is pretty much the same, but instead of the serum I use a retinol that my facialist gave me. It’s a pretty light one because my skin gets sensitive with the stronger ones.”

“I’ll exfoliate twice a week. I also use sunscreen every day, whether it’s sunny or not.”

    Lips

“In my private time, I like to be natural, but on a shoot I want makeup! [For] rosy cheeks [and for my lips I use] Benefit Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain. I always wear it.”

    Parfum

“The Givenchy Dahlia Divin Eau de Parfum Nude makes me feel like a modern goddess, sensual, and strong.”

    A Thick Brow

“I used to over-pluck them. At my first agency in Paris, they were like, ‘Girl, you gotta grow those eyebrows out!’ They grew back, thank God.”

    Hair Care

“Because there are always people working on my hair, I use hydration masks which I leave on overnight and wash out in the morning. Or I use natural oils that I have around the house. My recipe is simple; a mixture of natural oils, coconut and argan oil.”

    Blond Hair Needs Extra Care

“For blondes it’s really important to keep your hair moisturized, and because our hair is worked on every day I use a lot of deep conditioning stuff. Kérastase is one of my favorite brands.”

    Beach Waves

“When it’s wet, tie it in a twisted bun and then undo to reveal wavy hair. Bio Oil is my favourite product from back home in South Africa and I love using it on my hair and body.”

    Go To Beauty Products

“Rose water oil, lip balm, fragrant oil and a good moisturizing cream Biotherm, Replumping and smoothing lip balm”

“For lips, there’s this drugstore brand that I use called Palmer’s just for moisture — I can’t go anywhere without that.”

    Body Care

    Body Oils

“Getting a good professional scrub is a good thing to do every couple of months to get rid of all the dead skin. I also love body brushing to get the circulation going. And body oils. If I have time after a shower I love to oil everything up. I use Bio Oil, coco butter and coconut oil.”

    Moisturizing

“Taking care of your skin is everything. It’s the largest organ in the body — to have good skin is the most important for me, from my face to my toes. When I’m finished working, the first thing I do is clean my face. For my body, I’m always moisturizing. Since I was a little girl I would be rubbing with cream, it’s like a ritual!”

    Biggest Beauty Indulges

“A great moisture mask or face massage. I have a facial once a month but I have to keep where I go a secret!”

    Make Up Free To Bed

“I use organic coconut oil to take my make-up off, I also add it to my smoothies to keep my skin glowing. It’s a great all round natural beauty product. The main thing my mum taught me was that you can never be too young to start taking care of your skin. No matter how tired I am, I will never sleep in my make-up.”

9 FACIAL MASSAGE techniques to stay young

    5 Minute Makeup

“If I only have five minutes, I’ll do an RMS concealer under the eyes, around the nose, and on the chin. I’ll do mascara. And this Benefit Lip Tint that I have that’s liquid. Then I sleek the hair up if it’s wet — give myself a facelift [laughs] — tie it in a bun, and put some earrings on.”

    Go To Base

“I like to mix a little bit of foundation [I like to use Armani Luminous Silk Foundation], with sunscreen or my moisturiser so it’s less coverage. I like to see the skin, and then on areas with redness, I’ll use the RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up concealer.”

    Concealer Hack

“It’s a concealer, it’s pretty full on. Dermacolor, it’s quite heavyweight stuff. So I do mix an oil or, something moist to kind of smooth it out. So I kind of you know, mix into everything here. This is great for the guns. I have some sun damage and markings from pregnancy. It’s a normal thing that happens. So just to set that a little.”

    Illuminator

“I use illuminator a lot on my cheekbones– you can put it on your nose and on the bow of your lips. I always think skin looks better if it’s glowing so that’s a good trick.”

    Contour

“I would be nothing without contour. So I make this funny face just to see where my cheekbone is. I like to use the same product for various things so that you don’t have to end up packing so much. This is one of my favourite products. The Hoola Benefit. I think everyone uses this. This gives you like a great tan. So I like to put a lot on my forehead because that’s where the sun would usually get you.”

    Mascara

“Mascara. I use this MAC Haute and Naughty. This one has a really fine brush. It gets like, quite wispy. So I like to get like really, to the root. And fan them out. I don’t always put on the bottom. ‘Cause my bottom lashes are longer than the top ones weirdly.”

    Blush For A Sun-kissed Look

“Blush, I love this Stila colour. I like to use my hands in everything. Because the warmth of your hand, just makes the makeup set better. So with this, I also put on my lids. I just feel like it makes you look a little more alive. So blush on the nose kind of gives a fake, sun-kissed look. ‘Cause that’s where you would look sunburned naturally.”

Candice Swanepoel’s 10-Minute Guide to “Fake Natural” Makeup and Faux Freckles | Beauty Secrets

    Freckles

“I learned this from a Brazilian makeup artist that I love to work with. This is, Dior Show. I warm it up a little on my hand. Just kind of go for it. Looks crazy at first. And then you use it like a patting action. I always felt freckles look really youthful and like you’ve been in the sun. And then I throw some random ones all over.”

    Air Conditioning

“No air conditioner! I didn’t grow up with air conditioning. I love the humidity, plus it’s good for the skin and the hair and everything. But my fiancé and his family, because it’s so hot where he grew up in Brazil, he likes to make it like a fridge – it’s a cultural thing.”

    Recap

Candice Swanepoel is one of the most iconic high fashion models. She has come a long way, as she grew up on a dairy farm in South Africa and was discovered at a flea market at the age of 15. A true self-made beauty.

“Just be. Don’t try to be yourself, because you already are. Balance your spirit and empower your gifts. If it is in you and you can feel it, see it, and want to share it, then learn to understand it, not become it. We are born with all the wisdom in the world; it’s up to us to open the door inch by inch throughout life.”
